WBTV created an emotionally engaging film for all staff of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust to raise levels of understanding of elderly patients and their needs and to ultimately lead to behaviour change amongst staff and improvements in care. WBTV created double Gold IVCA Award-winning film Barbara's Story - a drama-based film based on real life experiences of dementia patients. We rigorously researched dementia and its effects to ensure that the character of Barbara was realistic and authentic to a clinical audience. The teaching technique in the film is one of self-discovery. We didn't set out to preach to staff but to show the patient perspective and the effect small kindnesses can have on the patient. The film has been distributed throughout the NHS and has been praised by Jeremy Hunt for changing behaviour and attitudes. Here, we talk to Eileen Sills, Chief Nurse and Director of Patient Experience at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust on the background to the award-winning dementia care training film produced by WBTV and its impact within the Trust.
